Hudson's Malamutes - Frequently Asked Questions

24. I read that Giant Alaskan Malamutes are a 'sub-breed' of Malamutes, a mixture of wolf and/or St. Bernard - what is that all about?

I'd say that it's all about ignorance concerning Alaskan Malamutes!

There is a natural range of size in Alaskan Malamutes, with some smaller and some larger and some giant, but they are all the same breed.

If you read the "Historical Tidbits" on our About Malamutes page, you will find descriptions of Malamutes where the sizes range JUST LIKE THEY DO TODAY

Those descriptions pre-date the Alaska Gold Rush of 1898 to 1906. That's important, because it was during that time when "outside" dogs were brought to Alaska and the Yukon to supplement the native dogs. The demand for dogs was overwhelming, as they were the only reliable transportation. "Outside" dogs were often mixed with native dogs with, of course, mixed results. However, because Malamutes are a Primitive breed (ancient), their DNA is so strong that outside influence is washed out within a couple generations , leaving the Malamute intact.

The Innuit people bred the Malamute. The coastal Innuit apparently bred the smaller Malamutes and used more of them for their sleds, while the interior Innuit used larger Malamutes and used fewer of them to pull their sleds in the deeper snow.

St. Bernard's and wolves have nothing to do with today's Alaskan Malamutes, Gentle Giant or otherwise.

Whomever is perpetuating that nonsense is doing a great disservice to this wonderful breed.

Psalm 115:1
Not to us, O Lord, but to you goes all the glory for your unfailing love and faithfulness.
